Tech to name new president on Friday

Thursday - 12/5/2013, 6:45pm  ET

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech's next president is set to make a debut.

The university announced Thursday that the Board of Visitors will name a successor Friday to President Charles Steger (STEE'-gur). He announced his retirement in June but agreed to remain at Blacksburg until the university's 16th president was selected.

Through his 14 years as president, Steger has won much praise. The university increased its research spending from $192 million in 2000 to more than $450 million currently. It also increased enrollment and capital projects and raised more than $1 billion in private funding.

Steger also was president at Tech when a student gunman killed 32 on campus before killing himself. Some parents have criticized his actions on April 16, 2007.
