Va. Council of CEOs membership getting younger

Monday - 12/2/2013, 9:31am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Council of CEOs' membership is getting younger.

The council has about 170 members. Thirty-five percent are younger than 45.

Executive director Scott McRoberts tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1bcPHdC ) that the council's members are now more likely to carry backpacks than briefcases.

The council connects top executives at Virginia companies so they can learn from one another.

McRoberts says the council attracts entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial people, who tend to be younger today.

Senior associate dean Richard Coughlan at the University of Richmond Robins School of Business says older employees at larger firms are delaying retirement. He says that could spur younger managers to seek other opportunities, such as starting a business or becoming a leader at a smaller firm.
