Not every Black Friday deal needs a charger

WASHINGTON — Not everything that draws crowds on Black Friday has a USB port or needs a charger.

The Washington Animal Rescue League offered a one-day Black Friday Special: $50 adoption fees for dogs and $25 for cats. That got a big response. From the time the doors opened at the shelter in Northwest D.C., staffers were busy introducing animals to prospective owners.

It was a good day for the Chihuahuas. Bruno was snapped up, because as Eleiana Evans said, “He’s spunky, and he looks like a nurturer.” She liked the way he hovered over his kennelmate Estrellita, or Little Star, who was also adopted.

Gabriella, or Gabby, isn’t a purebred Chihuahua, which is what Sharon Brown used to have. But on Friday she said that didn’t matter. Sometimes “you just look into a dog’s eyes and you know.” So Gabby, the Chihuahua mix, is going home with Brown.

Not everyone was there to get a dog or cat that day. Melissa Alvarado from Brentwood was hoping her mom might let her get a dog. They were together, considering the type of dog that would be a good fit for their home. It would have to be a boy, Melissa said, noting that was her mom’s preference which was just fine with her. “I just want a puppy,” she said, looking over a particularly cute black dog who sat quietly studying Melissa and her mom.

A number of cats and kittens were headed to new homes, too. Sir Boots and Alex, two cats with luxurious coats, were getting lots of attention, as were the kittens. Chicha had already been snapped up by Robin Kameras who loves Chicha’s adventurous attitude. Now Kameras had come back with a friend who also wants all the love — and adorableness — a kitten has to give.

WARL shelter director, Maureen Sosa, says the Black Friday promotion has been done in the past and was a huge success, and this Friday’s special seemed to be repeating that. Sosa says the shelter has dogs and cats to meet the needs of anyone looking to adopt — young kittens, older cats, bouncy puppies, and calm older dogs.
