ETTRICK, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia State University Board of Visitors has decided to hire a consultant to look at campus safety issues.
The Petersburg Progress-Index reports the board made the decision after an emergency four-hour meeting behind closed doors Monday.
The action comes after a series of incidents, including the fatal shooting of a student off campus late Thursday, a melee and stabbing during homecoming celebrations, and the banning of the football team from the CIAA playoffs.
Students, faculty and faith leaders in the community held a unity prayer rally Sunday night.
