Police shoot, kill man outside homeless shelter in Fort Belvoir

FORT BELVOIR, Va. – Fairfax County police say an officer shot and killed a man as officers tried to break up a fight at a homeless shelter near Fort Belvoir.

Police spokesman Officer Eddy Azcarate says as at least two officers tried to break up a fight outside the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter on Wednesday night, a man who was fighting turned and assaulted one of them.

Azcarate says an officer fired a service weapon and fatally wounded the man. He says the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

One officer received injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Officials did not identify the man who was killed or the officers involved.

Azcarate says the department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau and an Internal Affairs unit are investigating the incident.
