Flies infest Pittsylvania County Jail again

Tuesday - 10/29/2013, 9:58am  ET

CHATHAM, Va. (AP) -- Flies have infested the Pittsylvania County Jail for the second time this year.

In May, humpback flies invaded the jail in Chatham. This time, it's dung flies.

The county Board of Supervisors has hired a contractor to build a concrete apron to divert water away from the jail.

Sheriff Mike Taylor tells media outlets that he hopes the project will eliminate the problem for good.

During the May infestation, Taylor says flies were burrowing into the plaster inside pipes and feeding off grease from the jail's kitchen area. Exterminators treated the building and damaged drain pipes were replaced.
