WASHINGTON (AP) -- A man from the United Kingdom has been sentenced to five years in prison for beating a student with a hammer in a restroom on the campus of George Washington University.
Forty-six-year-old Mohammed Niazi was convicted in August of assault with a dangerous weapon and other offenses. He was sentenced Friday in D.C. Superior Court.
According to evidence presented at trial, on Oct. 9, 2009, Niazi went into a bathroom in Duques Hall, an academic building on GW's campus.
Prosecutors say Niazi began beating a man on the head with a metal hammer. He escaped and was identified by surveillance video.
Authorities say Niazi left the U.S. two days later. He was arrested April 4 in Panama.
