Several injured at Howard University homecoming

WASHINGTON – Howard University’s homecoming weekend got off to a violent start as at least eight people including two police officers were injured at a concert known as the Yardfest.

Police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump says the two officers suffered minor injuries during the incident Friday afternoon. Police then placed the situation under control but one civilian suffered a broken leg. Crump did not provide more details about the other injuries.

All the injured were taken to Howard University Hospital for non-life- threatening injuries.

Ambulances were called to the scene around 4 p.m. Friday for a report of injuries at the university’s outdoor homecoming concert. At the entrance outside of Douglass Hall on the campus, yellow police tape and barricades blocked the entrance.

Friday’s concert was scheduled to include performances by artists including Big Sean, Juicy J and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

The event had been free in the past, but this year, tickets were $5. Organizers say those who didn’t get in will get their money back.
