PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) -- Three former inmates say they or other prisoners used heroin and other drugs at a work-release center run by Portsmouth Sheriff Bill Watson.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/HiAJfO ) that former inmate Anthony Rodgers told a judge at a May hearing that he maintained his heroin habit while at the work center. The newspaper recently obtained a transcript of the hearing.
Milton Hoover told the newspaper he used heroin that he bought from other inmates six or seven times while working at the center. Another former inmate, Joshua Wilson, said he didn't use drugs but knew they were available.
A spokesman for Watson, who faces three challengers in the Nov. 5 election, denied the allegations.
Commonwealth's Attorney Earle Mobley says he's investigating.
