It’s official: Whole Foods is heading to Navy Yard

Whole Foods’ spread across the District continues: The high-end organic grocer is coming to the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.

Whole Foods had signed a lease for a new building at 800 New Jersey Ave. SE, a representative for developer W.C. Smith confirmed at the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6D meeting Monday night.

The grocery store had been rumored to be interested in the neighborhood for several years, including more than two years ago. ANC 6D commissioner David Garber had been hinting on Twitter in recent days that the deal was done.

A previous effort to bring Whole Foods to the project fell apart in 2011 when the developer opted not to seek $8 million in tax breaks for the project.

Whole Foods is also rumored to be the grocery anchor the redevelopment of the old Murry’s Grocery Store property on H Street NE, although that lease has not yet been confirmed.
