Va. utility seeks early OK to reduce fuel charge

Tuesday - 10/15/2013, 6:30pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power is asking regulators to reduce the company's fuel charge, which would trim a typical bill by $3.70 a month.

The request was submitted Tuesday with the State Corporation Commission.

Dominion's chief operating officer, Paul Koonce, said the fuel charge adjustment is not required for another seven months, but he said the company wants to pass along the savings for customers who are struggling in "this difficult economy."

The change would reduce the monthly electricity bill for a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours to $108.35. The current monthly bill is $112.05.

The company asked that the change take effect Dec. 1.

If the request is approved, Dominion said its overall electric rates will be down to virtually the same level they were more than five years ago.
