CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- University of Virginia Medical Center Vice President and CEO R. Edward Howell is stepping down.
Howell announced Wednesday that he will retire in July 2014. He says in a news release that he plans to teach and pursue personal and family interests. He also is a professor in U.Va. School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences.
The 64-year-old Howell tells The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1bJkdmf ) that he believes it's a good time to refocus some of his activities.
Howell has served as vice president and CEO of the medical center since February 2002.
U.Va. plans to conduct a national search for Howell's successor.
