Cruz in Virginia
WTOP's Bob Madigan reports
WASHINGTON - Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor, spoke briefly at the annual Family Foundation of Virginia gala on Saturday, but Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was the headliner at the conservative Christian organization's event.
While neither breaking any new ground nor breaking away from his commitment to continue tying the Affordable Care Act to the government shutdown, Cruz mesmerized the audience at the Greater Richmond Convention Center for more than an hour, though he managed to keep his joking promise to "keep my speech under 21 hours," referring to his famous marathon speech in the Senate last month.
"If the answer is putting your faith in Washington, we're going to be disappointed," Cruz said, adding that "career politicians in both parties have gotten us into this mess, but it's going to be the American people who get us out."
The gala wrapped with a heartfelt sing-along of "God Bless America."
