Poll on Va. governor’s race shows widening gap

WASHINGTON – Another poll on the Virginia governor’s race shows the gap between the candidates widening.

The University of Mary Washington poll shows 42 percent of likely voters favor Democrat Terry McAuliffe, with 35 percent in favor of Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis was favored by 10 percent.

UMW professor Steven Farnsworth says the strong showing for Sarvis indicates the other two candidates need to adjust their strategy to a three-way race.

In the lieutenant governor’s race, 39 percent favored Democrat Ralph Northam to 35 percent for Republican E.W. Jackson.

Republican attorney general candidate Mark Obenshain was favored by 42 percent of the voters, while 36 percent backed Democrat Mark Herring.

The poll, conducted in the last week of September, just after the statewide televised debate, has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.
