WASHINGTON - A Maryland state trooper is in serious condition after being struck by a car during a traffic stop in Anne Arundel County early Sunday morning.
Kline arrived on the scene after another trooper pulled over a driver heading east on Route 100 near the exit for Catherine Avenue at about 1 a.m., according to a statement from the state police. As the first trooper was doing a sobriety test on the driver, Kline pulled over to the shoulder of the eastbound lanes behind the two cars and walked on the shoulder toward the scene.
She was hit by a car driven by Enrique Guzman, 21, of Pasadena, and driven into the back of the car ahead of her before she fell into a ditch at the side of the road, the police say.
Kline suffered head injuries, a broken arm, cuts and contusions. She was taken by helicopter to Shock Trauma, where she's listed in serious condition.
Both patrol cars had their overhead lights on, according to the statement. No one else was injured. Guzman passed a sobriety test and has not been charged, but the investigation continues. The original driver also passed a sobriety test.
The eastbound lanes of Route 100 were closed for about four hours.
