DANVILLE, Va. (AP) -- A California company is interested in harnessing hydroelectric power from a Virginia dam.
KC Scoby Hydro LLC of Fair Oaks, Calif., has applied for a preliminary permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the Union Street Dam project in Danville.
In her application, owner Kelly Sackheim says the project along the Dan River could produce enough energy to power two homes.
The Danville Register & Bee (http://bit.ly/1dlpm14) reports Sackheim has three years produce a plan that also details access to the dam and a power plant location.
City officials are skeptical, saying the cost of building a plant for such a small return isn't worth it.
Sackheim's company, formed in 2007, also has proposed projects in California, New Hampshire, New York and North Carolina.
