Woman struck, killed on Interstate 495

WASHINGTON – A North Carolina woman was struck and killed on Interstate 495 on Friday night after she left the vehicle she was riding in, presumably to smoke a cigarette.

The Virginia State Police say that at about 10:15 p.m. Friday, a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder of eastbound I-495 at the 173-mile marker, just east of the Eisenhower Connector exit. Echo Davis, 27, of Benson, N.C., the passenger of that vehicle, got out presumably to smoke a cigarette, the police say, then wandered into the travel lanes, where she was struck by a passing vehicle and killed.

The police also say that three vehicles were stopped for the crash when, at about 11:20 p.m., a fourth caused a chain-reaction crash involving all four vehicles. The driver and passenger of the fourth vehicle then ran into the woods off the highway. The Fairfax City police caught the two men with the help of police dogs and a helicopter, and Ascencio Fabian, 32, of Springfield, Va., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and one felony count of hit-and-run.
