NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The USS Mahan has returned to Virginia following an eight-and-a-half-month deployment that included being positioned in the eastern Mediterranean Sea for a potential strike against Syria.
The Mahan is a guided-missile destroyer that left Naval Station Norfolk in December. It returned to its home port on Friday, a few weeks later than originally planned when it first deployed to conduct ballistic missile defense around Europe.
The deployment was extended after the Mahan became one of the first destroyers to respond as the U.S. began deciding whether to take military action against Syria. Four other destroyers that are also home ported in Norfolk are still on scene in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Many of the crew's family members say they're relieved the Mahan returned before a potential conflict.
