BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Sheriff's Office says a small device has exploded in a trash can outside Baltimore's main courthouse complex. There were no injuries and no damage reported.
Spokeswoman Lt. Carla Lightsey says the device went off about 2:30 p.m. Thursday in front of the west building of the Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. Courthouse downtown. Lightsey says witnesses reporting hearing a loud noise, "like a shotgun." Smoke was seen coming from the trash can, she said.
The device blew the lid off the trash can, which was on the Calvert Street side of the complex.
She said the courthouse was evacuated.
Authorities don't know what type of device exploded. Lightsey said the Baltimore Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for security at the courthouse, is reviewing surveillance videos.
