Va. justices reject serial killer's claims

Thursday - 9/12/2013, 12:40pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A serial killer sentenced to death for murdering two George Washington University students has lost another round in the Virginia Supreme Court.

Alfredo R. Prieto claims he was denied effective representation by his lawyers at his trial and sentencing. The justices unanimously rejected those claims Thursday.

Prieto was already awaiting execution in California for raping and murdering a 15-year-old girl when a DNA sample connected him to the 1988 rape and murder of Rachel Raver and the slaying of Warren Fulton III in Reston. The crime was unsolved until 2005 when California entered a sample of Prieto's DNA into a national database that matched samples from the Virginia crime scene.

The Virginia Supreme Court upheld Prieto's death sentence last year.
