Trash workers strike in Montgomery County

WASHINGTON – Trash collectors went on strike Monday in parts of Montgomery County, but the county’s Division of Solid Waste Services says that the strike will have “little impact” on services.

The workers are employees of Potomac Disposal, one of three trash- and recycling-collection services contracted by the county. ABC7 reports the workers are protesting alleged immigration enforcement threats by the company. Employees are also working to negotiate health care and wages.

Division of Solid Waste Services director Dan Locke says in a statement that Potomac Disposal “has taken steps” to ensure that service will be uninterrupted.

The strike affects Potomac and Silver Spring, according to the statement.

Locke adds that residents due for Tuesday pickup should put out their trash and recyclables by 7 a.m. as usual.

Anyone due for Monday service whose trash and recyclables weren’t picked up by 7 p.m. should call 311 – and keep their materials on the curb.
