Pittsylvania board to appeal meeting prayer ruling

Wednesday - 9/4/2013, 9:41am  ET

CHATHAM, Va. (AP) -- A legal fight over prayers at the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors' meetings isn't over.

A federal judge issued an injunction in March barring the board from opening meetings with prayers associated with any one religion.

Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to appeal the ruling.

The board's attorney, state Sen. Bill Stanley, tells the Danville Register & Bee ( ) that a notice of appeal will be filed within the next week. Stanley says the board also will ask the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to stay the proceedings until the U.S. Supreme Court decides a similar case involving the town of Greece, N.Y.

U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanksi's ruling came in a 2011 lawsuit filed against the board by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Barbara Hudson.
