WASHINGTON - For most, school is back in session. And that can make things a little busy for both kids and parents.
Children need rides to sports practice and music lessons and, of course, picked up when they're done. On top of that, everyone needs to get homework done and eat dinner.
A growing debate in the region is that students need more sleep and school should start later in the morning.
Seniors in Fairfax County can now apply to skip their first class of the day during the 2013-2014 school year, granted they don't need it to graduate. The option is only for seniors and students need to apply because class schedules were already established before the resolution went into effect.
A parent or guardian and the high school principal must give written permission for the change to apply.
While students could get more sleep, it could mean complications for transportation. Bus transportation won't be offered to students who choose this option.
This story has been updated to correct that students can apply to skip their first class of the day, not the first day of classes.
