Man in wheelchair falls onto Metro track, is rescued

WASHINGTON – There was drama and heroism on the Green Line on Friday as a disabled man and his wheelchair fell onto the tracks at the L’Enfant Plaza station.

ABC7 reports that the man fell onto the tracks at about 1 p.m. and five people pulled him and his wheelchair out of danger.

Verdell Thompson, a witness, said she saw the man come close to the edge of the tracks and worried about him falling over. “You entertain that thought,” Thompson said, “and as soon as you thought about it, he went over.”

“We didn’t think,” says Bryan Williams, one of the rescuers; “we just ran to him.” He and co-worker Earl Myers said that lifting the wheelchair was the hard part.

Asked whether he was worried for his safety, Williams said “after I did it, I did,” with a smile.

The man was taken to a hospital.
