SURRY, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power's nuclear power plant in Surry is getting a new inspector from federal regulators.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it has assigned Philip McKenna as the senior resident inspector at the facility 17 miles northwest of Newport News.
At least two inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant to serve as the NRC's eyes and ears at the facility.
They conduct inspections, monitor major work projects and interact with plant workers and the public.
McKenna has served as an inspector at the Salem nuclear plant in New Jersey since 2010.
Before joining the agency in 2008, he was a submarine officer in the Navy for 25 years.
