JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman says the captain of a ferry involved in an accident is no longer employed by the agency.

VDOT spokeswoman Lauren Hansen tells WAVY-TV ( ) that Jack Goolsby was let go following a preliminary investigation of the accident. He had worked for VDOT since September 2012.

Last week, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry began pulling away from the pier as vehicles were boarding. A car fell into the James River and the driver, 19-year-old Emma Fretts, had to swim to the dock.

Fretts tells WAVY that her car fell backward off the ramp and into the water.

She says she tried to stay calm. After several attempts, she opened the car's windows, got out and climbed onto the roof.

She says the ferry's captain apologized to her.
