RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia's U.S. senators have recommended two judges for the position being vacated by U.S. District Judge James Spencer.
The names of U.S. Magistrate M. Hannah Lauck and Richmond Circuit Court Judge Clarence N. Jenkins Jr. were forwarded to President Barack Obama on Wednesday. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine noted in a letter to the president that the Virginia State Bar screened both candidates and rated them "highly qualified."
Lauck has been a federal magistrate judge for eight years. Before that, she spent nearly a decade as an assistant U.S. attorney.
Jenkins was a juvenile and domestic relations judge before being elevated to the circuit court bench seven years ago.
Spencer has announced that he will take senior status in March.
