WASHINGTON -- Dozens of cats and dogs were rescued from Arkansas on Wednesday and delivered into the arms of loving volunteers in Maryland.
The more than 90 animals were living in deplorable conditions in White County, Ark. when state police became aware of the situation and called in the Humane Society.
"It was the property of a small family who started out with good intentions of trying to help a few dogs," says Michelle Cascio, emergency placement program manager for the Humane Society. "They were trying to rescue as many as they could, but they just couldn't afford to take proper care of them."
All the pets needed medical care and treatment, Cascio says.
"They've been altered, vaccinated and cared for and now they are ready to be put up for adoption," she says.
The Washington Animal Rescue League, Lost Dog and Cat Rescue, SPCA of Anne Arundel County and the Humane Society of Calvert County will be posting the dogs and puppies on their websites. All are up for adoption and looking for forever homes.
