Regulators OK Dominion bid for Va. power plant

Friday - 8/2/2013, 5:56pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia regulators have approved Dominion Virginia Power's request to build a gas-fired power plant in Brunswick County.

The State Corporation Commission on Friday gave the state's largest utility the green light to the proposed $1.3 billion, 1,358-megawatt power plant near Lawrenceville.

Regulators said the company with about 2.3 million customers in Virginia established a need for the additional capacity and energy.

Richmond-based Dominion said it plans to begin construction immediately and expects the power station to operating in the summer of 2016.

The initial increase to the typical residential customer will be 81 cents starting Sept. 1.

The Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club says voiced disappointment in the SCC's decision. It opposed the plant, saying Dominion should look to cleaner energy such as wind and solar.
