D.C. gears up for its 5th annual beer week

WASHINGTON – In the middle of Virginia’s second annual craft beer month, the D.C. area has its own celebrating to do with its fifth annual DC Beer Week.

The Washington region’s beer scene is bigger and better than ever before, and it’s growing at a rate of two breweries each year, according to Teddy Folkman, the chef and owner of Granville Moore’s and the chairman of DC Beer Week.

The week-long local beer event will take place Aug. 11 to Aug. 18 and will feature a variety of activities, from craft tastings, to live music and educational seminars.

“DC Beer Week 2013 is going to be a phenomenal year,” says Folkman, who enlisted the advice and expertise from those in charge of Philadelphia Beer Week and Baltimore Beer Week.

Five years ago, DC Beer Week started as “just an idea” between friends. Folkman says he wanted to do something that celebrated the craft beer culture in the D.C. area. Now, the week is much bigger than Folkman ever thought it would be.

“It just makes sense this year,” he says.

“It’s really turning into more than just a celebration of craft beer. It’s turning into a celebration of craft beer and the nation’s capital, together.”

Businesses from area restaurants, to the Howard Theatre and the Washington Nationals are getting in on this year’s beer week, which ends with a sneak preview of Bluejacket, the District’s most anticipated brewery, scheduled to open in September.

“(DC Beer Week) is something that’s going to happen for many more years to come. It’s going to keep on growing, and we just love the support D.C.’s giving it and the area around D.C.,” Folkman says, adding that the week is not limited to the city’s four quadrants, but the region as a whole.
