Path of stray bullet that killed Va. boy narrowed

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) -- Police say a stray bullet that killed a Chesterfield County boy likely was fired less than a mile away from the victim.

Chesterfield Capt. Chris Hensley tells media outlets that investigators are canvassing neighborhoods within a 5,000-foot radius from the site where the bullet struck 7-year-old Brendon Mackey.

The bullet hit Mackey on the top of his head as he walked with his father to a July 4 fireworks display at Swift Creek Reservoir. The boy died the next day.

Hensley says the bullet is believed to have been fired at a 55- to 70-degree angle and came almost straight down.

He says the search for the person who fired the gun will take time.
