Miles from Va. battlefield, Wal-Mart store opens

LOCUST GROVE, Va. (AP) -- Customers were lined up as a Wal-Mart Supercenter opened for business in Orange County after a bruising battle over its first proposed site near a hallowed Civil War site.

The Locust Grove store that opened Wednesday is about 4 miles from the retail giant's preferred site near The Wilderness battlefield.

That location stirred a national outcry from battlefield preservation groups, celebrities such as actor Robert Duvall and historians. They said the store would create too much traffic near the fields where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met on the battlefield in 1864.

As the issue went to court, Wal-Mart relented and decided to move the 128,000-square-foot store down Route 3.

Media reports say a color guard greeted customers, who flocked to the store's opening.
