Fairfax Co. looks ahead to your commute in 2050

WASHINGTON – Perhaps the future won’t look like “The Jetsons” with flying cars anytime soon, but a local county is looking ahead to the year 2050 to ease traffic congestion on the roads.

Fairfax County Senior Transportation Planner Thomas Burke says the public will get a chance to weigh in at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairfax County Government Center.

“This plan will recommend extensions of the Metrorail. It will also enhance the Metrorail with light-rail and bus rapid transit options. It’s going to definitely shift the balance in favor of transit and less on highways and automobiles,” he says.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is conducting the Countywide Transit Network Study to determine the types of transit systems needed to accommodate forecasted growth throughout the county over the next several decades.

The study also will recommend how the system can be phased in and funded over time.

The next steps in the study will be to respond to the commentary received on the proposed concept. The department will consider and incorporate potential revisions, as well as develop final study recommendations during the fall of 2013.
