WASHINGTON (AP) -- Howard University students are planning a vigil for a student who was shot and killed during an attempted robbery on the night of Independence Day.
Friends of 22-year-old Omar Sykes plan to gather Saturday night. WRC-TV (http://bit.ly/1512qiC ) reports the Howard University Student Association is organizing the vigil Saturday and asked that it be private so that friends can grieve the loss of their friend and classmate.
Sykes was shot and killed Thursday evening after a being confronted by two men. Another student who was walking with Sykes was beaten. Police have said they believe it was a random encounter.
Howard University has identified Sykes as a junior marketing major and a member of the Alpha Phi Omega international service fraternity.
