WASHINGTON -- The delegate to Congress from the U.S. Virgin Islands says she will give away "tainted" campaign contributions linked to a Washington businessman who's at the center of a wide-ranging federal investigation.
Democratic Del. Donna Christensen says in a statement released through her campaign that she had no way of knowing she received illegal contributions at fundraisers organized by Jeffrey Thompson. She plans to donate the money to charity.
Two Thompson associates have pleaded guilty in the past week to making contributions to elected officials that they were later reimbursed for by Thompson or his accounting firm.
Thompson's home and offices were searched last year. He has not been charged with a crime. He's also the subject of a grand jury investigation involving District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray's 2010 campaign.
