Frederick readies welcome mat for Gettysburg visitors

WASHINGTON - As the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg nears, finding a hotel room will be a mission of its own.

Let's get right to the point. If you are one of the 25,000 visitors expected per day to traverse the battlefield for the upcoming commemoration, you're not going to find a hotel room in Gettysburg, Pa.

Everything is booked in the historic city, which has a modern day population of just 7,600 people, according to John Fieseler, director of tourism for Frederick County, Md.

Just 35 miles to the south, Frederick has always come to the aid of Gettysburg, Fieseler tells WTOP.

After the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863, the city of Gettysburg couldn't possibly care for the thousands of wounded and dead. It took more than a year to clear the battlefield. Most of the wounded were taken to Frederick, where every home and business in the city housed and cared for injured soldiers.

The 150th anniversary will be no different, just a lot more pleasant. Fieseler says that the city has hotel rooms available but for how much longer he doesn't know.

So, if your plans are to travel to Gettysburg and you need a hotel room, start calling the hotels in Frederick now.
