RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Seven people died on Virginia highways over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, the lowest total for that holiday period since 2009.

According to the Virginia State Police, the fatality total was down from 11 during the 2012 Memorial Day weekend. It matched the 2009 total, which came a year after 18 people were killed during the holiday weekend.

The seven deaths occurred in Newport News and the counties of Amelia, Carroll, Fairfax, Patrick and Southampton.

State police stepped up enforcement efforts over the holiday weekend, writing nearly 12,000 speeding tickets and more than 2,600 reckless driving citations. There were 137 drunken driving arrests and more than 1,100 tickets for seat belt violations.
