RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Twenty Virginia military members who died in the past year were honored at a Memorial Day ceremony in Richmond.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/12Juw0r ) that more than 1,000 people attended Monday's event at the Virginia War Memorial, where the names of the 20 were read. Gov. Bob McDonnell thanked those "who sacrificed everything to protect the liberties of the United States of America."
At Fort Harrison National Cemetery in Henrico County, park Superintendent David Ruth and about three dozen others laid a wreath on the grave of George A. Buchanan. The Union infantryman from New York won a Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of New Market, but his grave didn't include any mention of the honor until recently, after a school teacher noticed the omission.
