Monday - 5/27/2013, 3:10am  ET

YORKTOWN, Va. (AP) -- Slaves who died while crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to America will be remembered during a ceremony in Yorktown.

The Yorktown Middle Passage Committee will host the ceremony at 8 a.m. Monday. A wayside sign also will be dedicated.

The committee says more than 31,000 Africans were disembarked in the York River District between 1698 and 1771. Yorktown was designated as the main port of entry for Williamsburg by the Virginia Assembly in 1691.
