VIRGINA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Grand juries in Virginia Beach and Suffolk have indicted a retired firefighter on more than 50 sexual assault charges.

Sixty- year-old Robert Vance Gallup is accused of assaults that occurred between 1976 and 1986.

The charges include forcible sodomy, aggravated sexual battery of a child age 13 to 15, and indecent liberties with a child.

Virginia Beach police tell The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/19XNoeM ) that officers were contacted more than a year ago by the victim, who said he'd been sexually abused during the mid- 1970s and mid-1980s. Police in Virginia Beach and Suffolk conducted a joint investigation.

Gallup is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

A Virginia Beach spokesman says Gallup was a firefighter for the city from 1983 until 2004, when he retired.
