Area ATM robberies becoming more brazen

WASHINGTON – There have been several ATM robberies across the area since April and some of them have been quite brazen.

In one incident, a woman was approached by a man with a shotgun inside the entrance of a Bank of America near Tyson’s Corner, in the 8300 block of Greensboro Drive. The woman gave him cash and her purse.

Montgomery County police say three people tried to take the entire ATM machine from a Bank of America in Potomac on Tuesday. They initially tried to load it onto a pickup truck. When that didn’t work, they tried to use a backhoe, which wasn’t successful either.

A store employee was making a night deposit at an ATM in Charles County when he was robbed. As a woman was getting in her car after withdrawing money from an ATM in Waldorf, a man came up to her with a gun and robbed her.

Before using an ATM, Diane Richardson with the Charles County Sheriff’s Department says people should pay close attention to their surroundings.

“You see anyone hanging around or sitting in a car? Are they watching you? If so, just watch what they do for a few minutes. Trust your instincts. If it just doesn’t look right, get back in your car and leave,” she says.
