BALTIMORE (AP) -- A 20-year-old cousin of Baltimore's mayor has been shot and killed in the city.
City police say Joseph Haskins was shot late Wednesday night during a home invasion at a northwest Baltimore residence. He died early Thursday morning at a hospital.
Haskins was a cousin of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on her mother's side. The mayor issued a statement Thursday calling the shooting a tragedy for her family. She says "senseless gun violence" affects too many people in the city and the nation, and she's asking that her family's privacy be respected.
The mayor remained at work at City Hall on Thursday.
In 2002, Rawlings-Blake's brother, Wendell Rawlings, was stabbed multiple times during a robbery attempt outside her home at the time.
