STERLING, Va. (AP) -- A 5-year-old boy and his grandmother were hurt when a rotting tree collapsed and fell on them as they relaxed in a hammock in Loudoun County backyard.
The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/12CD9sz ) reports the accident happened Saturday around 1:30 p.m. at a home in the 1900 block of East Beech Road.
Authorities said the boy's injuries were critical and life-threatening and the grandmother's injuries were serious but not life threatening.
Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Liz Mills says the tree was 12 to 18 inches in diameter and old and rotted out from termites and ants.
