CULPEPER, Va. -- A former Culpeper police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman will spend three years in prison.

A jury convicted 33-year-old Daniel Harmon-Wright on manslaughter and unlawful shooting charges in January. The Culpeper Star-Exponent (http://bit.ly/106WrWn) reports that Culpeper Circuit Court Judge Susan Whitlock ordered Harmon-Wright to submit to a mental health evaluation as part of his sentencing.

Harmon-Wright was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a church parking lot when he shot 54-year-old Patricia Ann Cook on Feb. 9, 2012. He claimed he shot Cook after she attempted to drive away in her vehicle with his arm caught in the window.

A $5 million wrongful lawsuit death lawsuit filed against Harmon-Wright by Cook's family is pending.
