Richmond board bars member from using 'Dr.' title

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Richmond School Board has barred a member from using the title "Dr." on school materials.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/17fIHxx ) reports that board chairman Jeff M. Bourne announced the decision Monday following a meeting with fellow board member Shonda Harris-Muhammed and her lawyer. Bourne said Harris-Muhammed failed to prove that she had earned a doctoral degree.

Harris-Muhammed said during the board's work session Monday that she completed the coursework. She said she was waiting for completion of an obligation before she receives her degree from Walden University. She declined to provide details.

Walden spokeswoman Tamara Chumley told the newspaper last week in an email that Harris-Muhammed hasn't earned a doctoral degree.

Walden offers online degrees for undergraduate and graduate students.

WTVR-TV first reported that Harris-Muhammed hadn't earned a doctoral degree.
