Boy averts kidnapping in Gaithersburg

UPDATE: Thursday – 4/25/2013, 5:50pm ET

WASHINGTON – Gaithersburg police have released a composite sketch and additional details about the man who attempted to abduct a child Monday evening.

Police now describe the would-be abductor as a black or Hispanic male, who is about 6-foot tall, weighs about 190 to 210 pounds, with a muscular build and a large neck. The man had a goatee and was wearing a three-quarter length white crew neck T-shirt, white pants and tan work boots.

He was in a white, square panel-type van, possibly a Chevrolet. The van had a sliding door on the side, tires with black rims and no hubcaps. The van had dark tinted windows and had red trim around the top of the van.

Police ask anyone who can identify this man or to report similar incidents with a suspect matching this description to contact investigators at 301-258-6400.

WASHINGTON – A potential kidnapping was thwarted Monday night in Gaithersburg, police tell WTOP.

Gaithersburg police say a 14-year-old boy was walking along Midsummer Drive around 7 p.m. April 22 when a white or Hispanic man exited a white van and approached him.

The man tried to grab the boy but he was able to push him away. The boy then ran and called police.

No other information on the suspect or his vehicle has been released.
