Celebrating Earth Day in the D.C. area

WASHINGTON - Monday, April 22 is Earth Day, an annual celebration of our planet and a day of environmental acknowledgement and awareness.

People all over the world take part in Earth Day in various ways. Some swap out the car commute to ride a bike, others plant a tree, visit a farmers market or clean-up trash along the roadside.

In the D.C. area there are several activities taking place in honor of Earth Day. Here are just a few.

Broccoli City Festival

When: April 21, noon-8 p.m.

This inaugural D.C. event promotes sustainable living right in time for Earth Day. The festival will take place at the D.C. Fairgrounds (located at Half and M Street SE, directly across from Nationals Stadium) and includes live music, food, craft beer, pop-up shops, wellness advice, yoga, games and more.

Anacostia Watershed Cleanup and Celebration

When: April 20, cleanup starts at 9 a.m., celebration follows

Volunteers are meeting on Saturday, April 20 to cleanup 20 sites around the Anacostia Watershed in D.C., Montgomery County and Prince George's County. A celebration -- including food, drink, live music and local exhibitors -- will take place following the cleanup at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Md. Earth Month and Union Station

When: The whole month of April

Union Station, in partnership with the Earth Day Network, is celebrating Earth Day all month. On Earth Day (Monday, April 22), there will be several on-going events, including a farmers market, live music, speakers and other activities. Check the Union Station website for more information.

Earth Day at the National Zoo

When: April 20, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Celebrate Earth Day at the National Zoo this weekend. A team of "Green Experts" will be on hand to organize green-themed crafts, discuss approaches to a more sustainable lifestyle and more. At the Kids' Farm, young participants can make their own plant pots with recycled newspapers.

Alexandria Earth Day

When: April 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The theme for this year's Alexandria Earth Day celebration is "Water: Every Drop Counts." The family-friendly event -- held at Ben Brenman Park -- includes a tree sale, educational exhibits, hands-on activities, live music and more.

Green Living Expo and Earth Week Community Fair

When: April 21, noon-4:30 p.m.

The fourth annual event will take place at Founders Hall on George Mason's Arlington campus. The celebration includes educational seminars, kid-friendly activities, food and more.

Earth Day Festival at Brookside Gardens

When: April 21, noon-4 p.m.

Montgomery County's Brookside Gardens will host a green craft fair, green vendors, wildflower walks, live music, Earth Day trivia and kid-friendly activities.

Earth Day at Tudor Place

When: April 21, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Georgetown's Tudor Place is opening up its historic doors for a family-focused Earth Day celebration. Activities for the day include a scavenger hunt, flower pot painting, eco-friendly refreshments and games.
