CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Tuition is going up at the University of Virginia.

The Charlottesville school's board approved increases in tuition and fees on Thursday.

The Daily Progress reports (http://bit.ly/Z40Ptd) that a divided board approved a 3.8 percent increase in in-state tuition and a 4.8 percent hike in out-of-state tuition.

That means tuition and fees will go up $452 to $12,458 for in-state students and up $1,826 to $39,844 for out-of-state students.

The board approved the plan 14-2. Rector Helen Dragas objected to the decreasing affordability of higher education, and said the tuition increase was too high.

The approved hike came the same day as Gov. Bob McDonnell's office released a letter in which he called on the Virginia's colleges and universities to limit tuition increases.
