Thursday - 4/18/2013, 2:50am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Howard University will host a formal groundbreaking ceremony for two new residential halls and an Interdisciplinary Research Building.

The ceremony on Thursday will take place on the grounds of the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library.

School officials say the halls will be designed to accommodate 1,360 students and will include generous social, study and programming spaces. The development is slated for completion by August 2014 and is estimated to cost $107 million.

The 81,000 square-foot Interdisciplinary Research Building is expected to be the cornerstone of the university's academic renewal initiative and will serve as a prominent gateway to the Georgia Avenue Corridor.

School officials say the research building will include wet and dry laboratories, instructional space, research support space, ground floor retail, and offices for faculty, students and academic staff.
