Tuesday - 4/9/2013, 4:59am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A council created by Gov. Bob McDonnell is continuing efforts to focus on creating jobs in Virginia's rural communities.

The Rural Jobs Council released its interim report to McDonnell on Monday. The panel is building upon the work done by the governor's Commission on Job Creation and Economic Development.

The governor's office says several themes were outlined in the report as being important to economic development in rural Virginia.

The items outlined in the report include increasing access to and improving existing business development resources, fostering and incentivizing the entrepreneurial spirit in Virginia's youth, and providing localities with tools to better attract entrepreneurs and small business owners. The panel also recommended improving the work, industry and college readiness of middle and high school students.
